The same box, two different legal statuses
Goods in a bonded warehouse are physically yours but cannot be freely used. Once nationalised, the same box with the same barcode enters free circulation. To the warehouse operator there is no visible difference between the two — and if the warehouse system does not know the distinction, neither does the record. Shipping bonded goods by mistake is not a stock error; it is a compliance problem.

When status is not on record
- Bonded goods are shipped as though nationalised, and the error usually surfaces during an audit.
- Stock is numerically correct, but which units hold which status is unknown.
- Matching bonded exits to ERP movements turns into manual reconciliation.
- A count variance cannot be explained, because counting sees quantity, not status.
Status travels on the goods
The answer is not a separate bonded ledger. Status is part of the item's own record and travels with every movement — exactly like a lot or serial number.
Bonded inbound
At goods receipt the item is recorded with bonded status; it sits in the warehouse but is not freely usable.
Nationalisation
Once customs obligations are complete, the status change runs as a warehouse transaction and is recorded.
Status at dispatch
The system knows which status is leaving, so goods not in free circulation are not shipped by mistake.
The hard case: partial nationalisation
A batch may not enter free circulation all at once. Part of it is nationalised while the rest stays bonded. From that moment the same product code carries two statuses, and any calculation based on the total quantity misleads. When status travels on the record, this stops being a problem and becomes simply two separate balances.
Where this matters most
Chemicals and hazmat
For imported raw materials, customs status and hazardous-goods reporting must be tracked at the same time.
Automotive supply
Imported parts are often nationalised in batches; the status of what is drawn into production has to be known.
Food and beverage
For bonded goods, customs status and expiry date need to sit on the same record.
