How many sets can I ship today?
Sales sells a single set; the warehouse ships four separate components. As long as those two views never meet on the stock side, a simple question stays unanswered: how many sets can I ship today? In most companies that arithmetic lives in a spreadsheet or in the warehouse manager's head, and is only confirmed by walking to the shelf.

Questions nobody can answer

- How many units of this component went to individual sale, and how many were reserved for sets?

Kitting is a transaction
Instead of opening a separate product record for the set and tracking it by hand, the conversion itself is recorded. Components leave stock, the set enters stock, and both sides update at the same moment.
Set definition
How many of which component makes one set — defined once, then used by every transaction.

Components go out, the set comes in. The transaction can run on the floor from a mobile terminal, and the record is created right there.
Sellable count
How many sets can be built is derived from component stock. It comes from records, not from arithmetic.
When a set is broken up
The reverse is a transaction too: the set is broken, components return to stock and reopen for individual sale. When that reversal is not recorded, the resulting gap shows up at count time as an "unexplained shortage" — although nothing was ever lost, only its identity changed.

Furniture
A chest, wardrobe, and headboard each sell on their own and also as a bedroom set. The same component carries two identities.
Automotive supply
Spare-part and assembly kits are built from individual parts; the kit's sellable count depends on component stock.
